5 Days Taita Plains & Lumo Wildlife Safari
A private 5,000-acre sanctuary in the Taita Hills, then cliff-top Lions Bluff over the Tsavo plains.
Discover the wild heart of East Africa on a journey from Nairobi to Kilimanjaro. This adventure takes you through flamingo-filled lakes, the legendary Masai Mara, the endless plains of the Serengeti, and the dramatic Ngorongoro Crater. Along the way, encounter the Big Five, glide across Lake Victoria, and end beneath the snow-capped peak of Africa's tallest mountain. A safari that blends thrill, culture and breathtaking scenery — truly the ultimate African expedition.
Airport pickup and transfer to your hotel. Depending on arrival time, optional visits to the Karen Blixen Museum for colonial history and coffee-farm landscapes, the Giraffe Centre for close-up interaction with Rothschild giraffes, the David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage, or the Nairobi National Museum. Nairobi is the world's only capital city with a national park at its doorstep.
Driving time 3–4 hours. Stop at the Great Rift Valley viewpoint at Mai Mahiu for panoramic views of the valley floor, volcanic cones and escarpments, with views of Mt. Longonot. Afternoon game drive in Lake Nakuru National Park, famous for black and white rhinos, Rothschild giraffes, lions, buffaloes, seasonal flamingos and pelicans. The soda lake takes on stunning pink hues when the flamingos gather.
Driving time 1–1.5 hours. Boat ride on Lake Naivasha to see hippos, fish eagles and birdlife, then a Crescent Island walking safari among giraffes, waterbuck and zebras — there are no predators on the island. Possible afternoon at Hell's Gate National Park, cycling between dramatic cliffs past hot springs and geothermal towers, the inspiration site for Disney's The Lion King.
Driving time 5–6 hours, passing through Narok, the Maasai cultural heartland, with views of rolling plains as you approach the Mara ecosystem. Afternoon sunset game drive in the Masai Mara. You begin spotting big cats early here — the Mara has dense lion populations.
Full-day game drive to the Mara River, the wildebeest migration crossing point in season. Optional visit to a Maasai manyatta for cultural immersion, or an early morning balloon safari. Expect the Big Five — lions, elephants, buffaloes, leopards and, rarely, rhino — along with cheetahs on the open plains and endless herds of plains game.
Move to a camp on the stunning Siria Escarpment, overlooking the Mara River and plains. Guided walking safari with Maasai naturalists: learn animal tracks, medicinal plants and bird calls, with possible encounters with giraffes, zebras and antelopes. Spectacular cliff-edge views over the Mara Triangle, and sunrises and sunsets that are unmatched.
Cross into Tanzania at Isibania and continue to Lake Victoria, the largest lake in Africa and the source of the Nile. Possible afternoon activities include a fishing village tour, a canoe ride, or cultural visits with local Sukuma communities. Lake Victoria sunsets are golden and expansive, with excellent birdlife including cormorants and kingfishers.
Early morning canoe experience among fishing boats, early markets and aquatic birds, then drive into the western corridor of Serengeti National Park. The Ihara River area is known for massive herds during the migration, with possible sightings of topis, elephants and crocodiles. The corridor is lesser-visited, offering quieter game viewing.
Full-day game drives in the central Serengeti around Seronera, exploring open plains and kopjes. This is the best place in Africa for leopard sightings, with abundant lions and cheetahs and resident herds of wildebeest and zebra.
Explore different regions on a full day of game driving — Moru Kopjes for lions on the rocks, and Retina Hippo Pool where dozens of hippos gather in one spot. Golden savannah plains offer perfect photography and endless horizon landscapes: true Out of Africa scenery.
Stop at Olduvai Gorge, the cradle of humankind, for the museum and a viewpoint over the archaeological excavation sites, learning about the early hominid fossils discovered by Louis and Mary Leakey. Continue to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area past Maasai villages, highland scenery and volcanic escarpments, with dramatic elevation changes and misty highlands.
Early descent into the Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a natural enclosure for more than 25,000 animals. High chance of endangered black rhino, a huge lion population, flamingos on Lake Magadi, and hippos, buffalo, hyenas and elephants. In the afternoon drive to Karatu, a green mountainside town of coffee farms, with optional coffee farm tours and local markets.
Depart Karatu after breakfast and drive around 1.5 hours to Tarangire National Park for a full game drive. Tarangire holds one of Tanzania's highest concentrations of elephants, with large family herds around the Tarangire River and iconic baobabs scattered across rolling savannah. Lions, giraffes, buffalo, zebra, oryx, kudu and hartebeest are all present, along with over 500 bird species. Evening sundowners overlooking baobabs or the river valley.
Relaxed breakfast and an optional short game drive if time allows. Depart Tarangire for Kilimanjaro International Airport, 3.5–4.5 hours depending on your lodge location and traffic near Arusha. Scenic views of the Maasai steppe, with optional stops at local craft markets for Tinga Tinga art and Maasai beadwork, or a coffee plantation near Usa River. On clear days you may see the snow-capped peak of Kilimanjaro or Mount Meru. End of safari programme.
