Frequently Asked Questions
Just about any time of year. The most popular seasons are mid-December to mid-March and August to the end of October, because of demand for Christmas, winter holidays and summer school breaks. An increasing number of visitors are realising that June and November are ideal, benefiting from lower visitor numbers. We offer some safaris with greatly reduced or no single supplements in April and May, and we may be able to offer good discounts for larger groups during that period — please contact us for details.
The millions of wildebeest and zebras are always somewhere, but they are not always in large herds and on the move — their location depends largely on the weather, which varies considerably from year to year. In general the herds begin to cross into the Masai Mara in July and continue through August. They remain in the region until the beginning of December, when they follow the rains southward back into Serengeti National Park. They can move in enormously long single-file lines or in huge herds.
Yes. All safaris can be booked with the exclusive use of a vehicle for your party. A custom safari for two clients is significantly more expensive per person than seats on a similar small group safari. However, on a custom safari the cost of the vehicle and driver-guide is divided by the number of clients sharing it, so the per-person cost reduces the more people are aboard. The maximum in one vehicle is usually 7, but on request — such as for families with children — we can carry up to 8.
If you are arranging an exclusive vehicle custom safari, then you are free to arrange whatever itinerary you choose, within logistical constraints. We present a small selection of proven itinerary favourites on this website, but we can arrange any required itinerary subject to practical and logistical considerations, and will be pleased to discuss and quote for your special requirements.
We do not operate a camping safari in Kenya. However, we can arrange a safari using a number of tented camps, providing a great holiday experience under canvas.
Yes. We can easily include single travellers on most set-date safari departures, subject to there being at least one other booking on the date chosen. There is a supplement to cover the additional cost of single accommodation, but there is no single supplement — or a greatly reduced one — on most safaris in the low season months of April and May.
A safari is a wonderful trip for any child old enough to enjoy and appreciate the experience. On most safaris there are quite long trips on rough roads, and these cannot really be recommended for babies and very young children. Children under 12 will benefit from reduced fares on scheduled airlines, and many lodges will provide an additional bed for a child sharing a room with parents at a reduced cost.
The most popular way to see wildlife on safari is in a 4x4 vehicle, but game walks and exploration by water in certain destinations are other exciting ways to do so. In East Africa your safari vehicles are mostly closed, with large windows and a pop-up roof so you can stand up and scout the surroundings. You can also enjoy a walking safari with a qualified guide as you traverse plains and forests, and top the experience off with a hot-air balloon ride above the landscape.
Embark on your African safari knowing you are travelling responsibly by visiting ecologically friendly lodges and camps, and giving back to the communities around you. Your team will ensure you reduce your carbon footprint by, among other things, running game drives in eco-friendly vehicles and offering drinking water in reusable bottles. Your contributions through accommodation and park entrance fees help maintain a healthy balance in the parks and reserves.
An African safari is an exciting adventure, and concern for your health should not be a key focus of the experience. Lodges offer bottled water and quality cuisine and comfort. For regions in malaria-risk areas a relevant prophylactic is recommended. Bug spray and sunscreen should be in your luggage, although lodges and camps do offer insect repellent in the rooms. Bring your own medicine, and reach out to your safari consultant if you need services such as a fridge to store medication. Some vaccinations may be a requirement — check with your consultant for advice.
It is advisable to pack light, in weight and in the kind of clothing you take. Most camps offer a laundry service, so there is no need to overpack. Choose a few long trousers, shorts and shirts in lightweight, breathable fabric that covers your skin, with neutral colours so you blend in with the surroundings. Comfortable walking shoes are all you need on safari, so leave your hiking boots behind unless you are trekking. Sandals are fine for wandering around your lodge or tent.
Almost all safari lodges and tented camps provide free Wi-Fi, across all three accommodation levels — economy, comfort and luxury. Wi-Fi is provided in the public areas including the reception, dining areas and lounge. It is not generally provided in individual rooms or tents.
Yes. Because you will need to hydrate frequently, we ensure unlimited supplies of drinking water. All our safari vehicles are fitted with a cooler box or mini fridge with a constant supply of cool, bottled water, and we replenish supplies during stops along the safari route.
It is usually not possible to extend a group sharing safari, because you share your safari vehicle with the other travellers in your group and need to leave and return as a group. An extension would also be subject to availability at your accommodation. If all group tour participants agreed and there is availability, it would be possible — an extra day on safari would require an additional charge.
