About Lake Nakuru National Park
Lake Nakuru National Park covers 188 square kilometres on the floor of the Great Rift Valley, south of Nakuru town — Nakuru means "dusty place" in the Maasai language. The lake is surrounded by wooded acacia and bushy grassland, and the surrounding escarpments give scenic views over the park. It is a birdwatcher's paradise, famous internationally for the thousands and sometimes millions of lesser and greater flamingos that nest along the shore, with over 400 migratory and endemic species recorded. The park is also a haven for two species of rhino — around 70 white and 25 eastern black — the most extensive rhino population in the country.
