Best Time to Visit the Masai Mara

Planning6 min read

Month by month through the Mara — when the herds arrive, when the crossings happen, and when you get the whole place almost to yourself.

The Maasai Mara is a year-round destination, which is true and also unhelpful. What actually changes month to month is the game viewing, the crowds and the price — and they do not all peak together.

July to October — the migration

This is the season everyone books. Wildebeest and zebra push north out of the Serengeti and into the Mara, and the river crossings happen somewhere in this window. The grass is short, which makes cats far easier to spot.

Two honest caveats. The crossings are unpredictable — herds can mill at the bank for hours and then not cross at all, and no guide can promise you one. And this is peak season: camps are full, rates are at their highest, and popular sightings draw vehicles.

January to March — the quiet excellent months

Our favourite window, and the one most first-time visitors never consider. It is hot and dry, the resident game is superb, big cats are denning, and there are a fraction of the vehicles. Rates sit well below July prices.

You will not see the migration. If that is the whole reason for your trip, come later. If you want big cats and space, come now.

April and May — the long rains

The wettest months. Some camps close entirely and those that stay open discount heavily. Roads get difficult and grass grows tall, which makes spotting harder. The landscape is spectacularly green and the birding is at its best.

Worth it for photographers and repeat visitors on a budget. Not where we would send someone on their only safari.

June — the shoulder

The rains taper off, the grass is still green, and the crowds have not fully arrived. Early migration herds sometimes appear late in the month. Good value and often underrated.

November and December — the short rains

Brief afternoon showers rather than all-day rain, and they rarely disrupt game drives. The herds have moved back south, but resident game remains strong. December fills up over the holidays; November is one of the quietest months of the year.

So when should you go?

  • You want the migration and crossings: late July to early October
  • You want big cats with fewer vehicles: January to March
  • You want the best value: June, or November
  • You are a photographer chasing dramatic skies: April, May or November

One thing worth saying plainly: the Mara has excellent game viewing in every month of the year. The migration is a spectacle, not a prerequisite. Some of the best days we have had out there were in February, with the plains to ourselves.
